Catan night
How does it feel to be dethroned?
That's how I teased the self-proclaimed undefeated champion(-in-Ottawa)of Catan, after B and I raced for the 10th point and he won by this much.
There are already plots to bring down the new champ...

Byron's wound

Season's greetings!
It's officially less than a week 'til Christmas so this week rather than our usual games we had a potluck and decorated gingerbread houses instead. A lot of things didn't go according to plan this evening but after a few drinks we still managed to have a great time :)
I hope everyone will also have a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday!

epic game :)
It was a tight race and I ended up losing by a mere 3-point to James - but what's more amazing is that we managed to fill in most nooks and crannies in the map, despite never drawing the piece that we needed when we needed it, especially for Michelle - the piece that she was looking for kept turning up for me and James until almost the very end!

a fun night of scrabble
We still met up for our usual game night yesterday despite Michelle's absence, and still managed to have fun playing an epic round of Scrabble followed by Boggle. Alan's an expert in a "tight" Scrabble game - he knows all the two-letter words allowed by the Scrabble dictionary and often played overlapping words where he would score points for 3 or 4 words. James, on the other hand, plays carefully and strategically - just like how he treats everything else in life. I always find it amazing how much you can learn about a person through playing games.
The Scrabble game opened with me laying down the first word followed by Alan's bingo then James' bingo - and by mid-game Alan and I had half given up hope because James was leading by far and had almost double the points compared to what I got. On top of that, while he was trying to block them, Alan gave away two triple-word-score bonus to James! It didn't help that Alan kept missing the vowels when he drew from the bag.
When the game was nearing the end and there were no more letters in the bag, I thought, hey, it was still a fun game even though I didn't get the luck to play a bingo. Then I saw it - my last 7 letters made a word - and one that could fit on the board too. With the bingo bonus and the penalties they suffered for having unused letters, I ended up coming in first, beating James by 20 points and Alan by over 50!! Coincidentally, my bingo word that effectively ended the game was "CRUSHER".
Epic.

warming up to the settlers of catan
almost skipped our games night due to the horrible rain, but I'm so glad I made it! Instead of the planned Carcassonne, we ended up playing The Settlers of Catan again - this time with the real version (as opposed to the traveller's version that we've been playing with). The game play is actually a little more varied than Carcassonne where the roll of the dice and strategic trading of resources could really influence the result and interactions among players are more important than luck in drawing the tiles. I'm starting to like it :)

MONOPOLY!!
Instead of our usual Carcassonne on our night out, we played a new card game (new to us anyways) - Monopoly DEAL. The object of the game is to be the first to collect 3 sets of properties - which is no easy feat as other players will try to stop you by collecting rent or even stealing your properties from you. Usually the game is short - a winner is often decided within 15 minutes. However, when we played last night - it turned into a huge competition between the strategists and we only managed to play 3 rounds. It was still fun though and now that the group is getting more familiar with the game it will hopefully go faster and more exciting :)
